Meet the Team
Our clinic has two main practitioners, physiotherapist Garry O’Dell and osteopath Gillian Brown.
We have teamed up to create a multi-disciplinary clinic specialising in back care, sports injuries and orthotics. We take a personal, ‘hands on’ approach to relieving your pain and getting you fit again. Based in the centre of Harpenden, we treat patients with a very broad range of conditions. You can expect a friendly welcome along with the highest standards of healthcare and professionalism.
I have been a Chartered Physiotherapist for 27 years, initially qualifying in Newcastle-upon-Tyne and starting work at the Royal Victoria Hospital. I continued working in the NHS for a further 8 years, both in the north and south of the country, mostly in large general hospitals. My final role in the NHS was Superintendent Physiotherapist for the North West Area Health Authority.
I’ve worked with many physiotherapists, physical therapists, osteopaths and chiropractics from all around the world. These experiences have led me to believe in a ‘hands-on’ philosophy i.e. passive movement is required to re-establish the normal mobility of tissue/joints. Exercise alone is not a remedy!
In April 1998 I started my private practice in Sandridge High Street, St. Albans. This became an established, well known and reputable clinic. The practice recently moved to Harpenden and I have joined forces with Gillian Brown who I have known for many years.
I am registered with the Chartered Society of Physiotherapists (MCSP), Health and Care Professions Council (hcpc) and Physio First (The Organisation for Chartered Physiotherapists in Private Practice).
I was born in Redbourn and grew up in Harpenden. In my earlier years I played semi-professional football, and travelled the world – alone. I started playing golf as my football days diminished. I now also enjoy playing badminton and taking care of two allotments, one of which has 36 grape vines on it!
I started my career as a professional tennis coach before developing an interest in injuries and their management.
I’ve been involved in sport all my life. I competed in junior national tennis tournaments and played in the American collegiate tennis system after gaining a tennis scholarship and studying sports science. I still play competitive tennis representing both Great Britain and Lancashire in the senior tennis events and keep fit with mountain biking and swimming.
Following a debilitating foot injury I suffered about 10 years ago, I found prescription orthotics to be the crucial thing to relieve my symptoms and correct my foot biomechanics.
This led me to undertake further study in foot biomechanics and orthotic prescription. I’ve invested in state of the art TOG Gaitscan equipment to help others.
I’m passionate about keeping others stay fit and healthy as I know how frustrating injuries can be.
I also run the Harpenden Injury clinic which was set up in 2008 and has become a reputable, busy clinic and now share my time between both clinics.
